AO Modulator

- Acousto-optic modulators (AOM) control the intensity of the diffracted beam.
- This may be digital (on:off) or analog (continuously variable).
- The driver frequency is fixed and the RF amplitude is modulated accordingly.
- The optical rise time (tr) is defined by the beam diameter (d) and crystal acoustic velocity (v).
- For high modulation rates, the beam is focussed at the AOM.
